Cross Your Palm
1400 Broadbottom Station.
Members of the Longdendale and Glossopdale Footpath Society met at Broadbottom Station for a walk in the Great Wood. Across the road a flight of steps lead to Harryfield and along through the fields to Hill End. Paths returned the ramblers to Mottram Road then it was on into Hurst Clough. Paths down the clough took the walkers to the site of Lowes’s Mill then out of the clough to Fields Farm. Tracks across the meadow headed to a bridge across the railway then a path down to Leylands lead through to Great Wood.
Once in the wood itself the forthcoming spring was manifest in the black thorn blossom, the alder catkins, pussy willow, celandines and beside the stream margins butter bur. Out of the wood at Green Side and around to Botham’s Hall on the wide rough road heading down to the River Etherow. On into Leylands Lane and time to view the disputed bridge, signs announced a forthcoming Public Inquiry. Finally along to Hodge Fold and up Moss Lane the walk ending as it began at the railway station.
